Restore forests to combat the climate crisis
IGEL’s vision is to transform the way the world works, creating better outcomes for people, organizations and our planet.
IGEL partners with Plant-for-the-Planet to take action for a more sustainable future and to combat the climate crisis. Together we spotlight global forest restoration projects. We offer support for restoring forest carbon sinks and for developing free cutting edge software solutions to help restoration projects worldwide.
Join forces to protect and restore our global forests
Help us get there, plant trees with IGEL and reduce C02
Built in partnership with Plant-for-the-Planet, the tree counter tracks our progress towards our forest restoration goal and enables donations to the restoration project in the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico with an easy to use and transparent platform.

Plant-for-the-Planet - a quest for forest restoration to combat the climate crisis
Plant-for-the-Planet was founded in 2007 by Felix Finkbeiner, who was 9 years old at the at time, following a school presentation on the climate crisis. Today it is a worldwide movement of high quality restoration projects and official partner of the UN Decade for Ecosystem Restoration 2021-2030.
Plant-for-the-Planet provides a high-tech toolset to fund, manage and monitor forest restoration at 300 project sites worldwide.
- the fundraising platform allows trees to be donated worldwide
- the TreeMapper-app tracks the development of the trees
- the FireAlert-app, using NASA satellite data, enables faster reaction to control wildfires
Supported by leading companies, the focus is to:
- restore ecosystems that have been degraded and destroyed by working closely with local government and communities
- conduct restoration research with scientific analysis and transparent reporting
- empower young people to become Climate Justice Ambassadors through educational activities at academies in 75 countries worldwide
Why the world needs a trillion more trees
Restoring lost trees is essential to preventing the climate crisis. Of the original 6 trillion trees that once covered the earth’s landmass, only 3 trillion remain. Trees generate a sustainable, low-carbon future for us all by:
- reducing emissions by capturing CO2 from the atmosphere
- storing the carbon in their structure and in the soil
- protecting and improving carbon sinks like forests
Trees offer mankind valuable time to reduce CO2 emissions. Researchers at ETH Zurich assume that 1 trillion additional trees can shift the climate system tipping points by ten to 15 years.
2-Degree Goal: Only with a combination of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the reforestation of 1 trillion trees by 2030 will it be possible to maintain the 2-degree limit and even as close to 1.5°C as possible as set down in the Paris Climate Agreement at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP21).
